Fat Tuesday Malasadas

Today is Fat Tuesday giving many folks the opportunity to eat stuff we should not eat. In the southern U.S. it might be a King Cake. In Hawaii, the guilty pleasure of choice is the malasada. Eat malasadas for Fat Tuesday. I admit to eating a couple of malasadas before today, but we did purchase a few in recognition of where we are staying

I think of the malasada as a variant of a dessert food common to many cultures. It reminds me of a cross between a donut and fry bread. You can get filled malasadas or sugared malasadas. Several of the fillings might be unfamiliar. I like lilikoi, but also chocolate. Cinnamon sugar is also great.

It turned out to be difficult to find malasadas. The Kauai Bakery is the go to place but it was sold out when we arrived a little after noon. We did find some at the same place we get out saimin.

Happy Fat Tuesday to all. Eat salad tomorrow.
